A divorce is difficult for everyone involved, but the changes can be especially hard on children. At the Law Office of Sara Howeller we strive to make these changes as easy as possible on all involved. Though relations between yourself and your soon to be ex may be strained, we encourage all of our clients to remember a few important facts when explaining things to their children.
Never badmouth your ex-spouse in front of your children. If your spouse is really as bad as you believe, your children will be smart enough to figure it out on their own. Remember, you may have the opportunity to choose a new spouse, but they do not get to choose a new parent.
Take time to answer any questions your child may have about the divorce, and be clear that you and your spouse will always be there for them. While this time period can be very stressful for you, it is undoubtedly very scary and confusing to your children. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has a very helpful article on how to approach the situation with your children: AACAP Children and Divorce
Though we frequently deal with families going through divorce proceedings, there are those far more qualified to help with the psychological aspects of divorce. If you are concerned about the ways in which the stress of this event is affecting your children, we would be happy to recommend some local trained professionals in the Orlando or Oviedo area.
